Institutional equilibrium

The principle of institutional equilibrium means that each institution should act within the framework of its competencies without encroaching on the powers attributed to the other institutions. It is up to the Court of Justice of the European Union to ensure that this principle is respected.

The powers attributed to the institutions as well as the relations between them have evolved greatly over the years, particularly for the Parliament whose power has increased.
