Ordinary legislative procedure

Following the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty, the codecision procedure became the ordinary legislative procedure of the European Union which has contributed to the strengthened powers of the Parliament. This procedure gives the European Parliament power, as representative of the Union’s citizens, to decide on instruments jointly with the Council of the European Union. They have become co-legislators on an equal footing with Council, except in cases noted in the treaties where the consultation procedure or assent procedure are applied.

Ordinary legislative procedure has one, two or three readings. The effect of it is to increase contact between the Parliament and the Council, the co-legislators, as well as with the European Commission.
